Let's start in New Jersey, where Spain outlasted Argentina 1-0 in extra time last Sunday to win their second World Cup title. Argentina goalkeeper, Emiliano Martínez, was extraordinary, setting a record with 11 saves in a World Cup final, but even he couldn't stop the Spanish onslaught. Spain generated 1.94 expected goals from 20 shots. Argentina finished with 0.2 xG from two attempts. Messi, at 39 years old, almost certainly played his last World Cup match. He gave us eight goals, 12 assists, and enough late-game magic 🪄 to fill a highlight reel for a decade. The tournament is over, but it was magnificent while it lasted. And now there's a Messi-shaped hole in our Sunday afternoons that MLB is going to have to work very hard to fill. ⚽
Then came Friday, and LeBron James reminded us the NBA offseason waits for no one. After weeks of deliberation, James announced he is signing with the Philadelphia 76ers on a two-year, $8 million deal. "This is my last decision," he wrote on X. "I still truly love this game, and I have more to give." Philly now has two former Finals MVPs after also acquiring Jaylen Brown from Boston earlier this summer - and with Embiid and Maxey already in the fold, the Eastern Conference just got a lot more interesting. The Sixers haven't been this relevant in years and the futures markets know it. 🏀
Which brings us to where we are, BettrNation family - that bittersweet stretch of the sports calendar where the World Cup is over, the NBA Finals are a memory, the Stanley Cup has been hoisted, and football is just close enough to smell but not quite close enough to touch. MLB is doing its thing and doing it well, with divisional races tightening post-deadline and some genuinely compelling September storylines taking shape. ⚾ We'll find the edges worth playing - we always do.
