The USMNT exit stings precisely because it was so complete 😔 Belgium was better from the opening whistle - up in the 9th minute, briefly tied for only about 90 seconds after a deflected free kick, then ahead again immediately, and then 3-1 after a Freese goalkeeper error that silenced a sellout Seattle crowd for good. Lukaku added a fourth in stoppage time just to make sure. Even the wild subplot of Trump calling FIFA to reverse Balogun's suspension - which FIFA actually did, to Belgium's fury - couldn't generate a different result. Eight Round of 16 exits in nine World Cups for the USMNT. The home stage didn't change the story. 😢
The quarterfinals are where we live now, and the field is exceptional. France is the class of the tournament - five wins, zero extra time, Mbappé operating like a man who has decided this is his World Cup - and their 2-0 win over Morocco solidifies them as the frontrunner. Argentina, for their part, has been equal parts brilliant and terrifying. Down 2-0 to Egypt in the 79th minute, Messi led a furious comeback to complete a 3-2 win that added yet another chapter to the most absurd career in sports history. Eight goals in this tournament. Thirty-nine years old. Every time someone announces Messi's limitations, he goes and does something like this. 🐐 The bracket lines are wide open and loaded with value.
On the NBA front, the LeBron Decision 4.0 continues to drag on like a season finale cliffhanger. Agent Rich Paul has reportedly spoken to 27 teams. The Warriors seem to have faded, the 76ers have been aggressive, and Cleveland has emerged as the consensus frontrunner around the league. Shams from ESPN reported this week that the teams "popping up" most are the Cavaliers, Heat, and Philly. A homecoming to Cleveland would be poetic. Giannis and LeBron together in Miami with Bam would be terrifying. Either way, the futures markets are pricing in all of it and there's real value in getting ahead of the announcement. 🏀
And for those of you who've already written off summer and are counting down to some real (American) football (and some cooler weather 🥵) - training camps are three weeks away. The CFB and NFL futures boards are open, the schedules are set, and the greatest betting season of the year is right around the corner 🙌
