The Carolina Panthers beat the Arizona Cardinals 33-30 in a thriller at Canton, Ohio Thursday night to officially open the 2026 NFL preseason - and it delivered more drama than any game featuring third-stringers has any right to. Rookie quarterback Haynes King ran in the winning score with no time remaining to steal the show from Carson Beck, who had looked sharp all game. Preseason football is back, it counts for nothing, and we couldn't be happier to have it. Meanwhile the rest of the preseason slate gets rolling this next week - pads are popping, depth charts are being sorted, and the lines that actually matter are just three weeks away. 🙌
The biggest story out of camp this week, however, might be happening in Los Angeles. Aaron Donald officially worked out for the Rams on Wednesday - the three-time Defensive Player of the Year, who last played in 2023, strapping on a helmet and putting himself through drills at the Rams' facility. It wasn't a tryout for the Rams to evaluate - Donald was evaluating himself. Sean McVay deadpanned afterward that it was "the greatest tryout we've ever had" and that "he can make the team." The decision is expected soon. Now picture this: Aaron Donald, Myles Garrett, and Kobie Turner on the same defensive line, in the same building as the Super Bowl. Thirty-one other NFL teams collectively said "oh boy" when the transaction wire hit Wednesday afternoon. Rightfully so. 🏈
In baseball, the AL West remains the most combustible race in the sport right now - the Rangers hovering at barely .500 in first place, the Astros surging after just crossing .500 themselves, and the Mariners still searching for the season everyone predicted they'd have. Meanwhile, the Yankees may have found themselves a new Pinstripe darling in George Lombard Jr., who homered for the Yankees in his MLB debut this week. The trade deadline has passed, rosters are locked, and the stretch run is officially underway. August is when baseball gets real. ⚾
