The calendar turn we've been waiting for since the World Cup final is here - NFL training camps are open, preseason games are on the horizon, and the sports betting season we actually live for is officially underway. Everything else has been a very enjoyable appetizer. This is the main course. 🍽️
And August arrived with actual news. Late Friday night the Big Ten and SEC announced they would support the Protect College Sports Act - a Senate bill that had been teetering on the edge of collapse all week - after a frantic round of last-minute negotiations produced concessions on NIL language that both conferences could live with. Trump got involved Thursday to push the parties back to the table, and school presidents from both conferences ultimately voted to back the bill. A Senate vote is expected next week before Congress heads on recess. The bill would cap transfers at one, regulate NIL agents, and inject an additional $27.5 million into the player retention pool, which is either the beginning of real order in college sports or the beginning of a new set of arguments, depending on your level of optimism. Either way, the two conferences that run college football just signed on, and that's not nothing. 🏫
Meanwhile MLB crossed into August with its best storylines firmly in place. The AL West is the league's most combustible race: the Rangers clinging to first place at barely .500, the Astros surging, and the Mariners still chasing the season everyone expected them to have. The Red Sox just had the most successful July in franchise history and look like genuine October contenders. The deadline has passed. Rosters are locked. The stretch run begins now. ⚾
